چکیده

We have analyzed the cross-correlations of daily fluctuations for N = 6 358 US stock prices during the year 1999. From those N (N −1)/2 correlations coefficients, the Minimum Spanning Tree (MST) has been built. We have investigated the topology exhibited by the MST. Eventhough the average topological number is n ≈ 2, the variance σ of the topological distribution f (n) diverges! More precisely, we have found that f (n) ∼ n −2.2 holding over two decades. We have studied the topological correlations for neighbouring nodes: an extremely broad set of local configurations exists, confirming the divergence of σ.

Financial markets can be seen as complex systems in non-equilibrium steady state, one of whose most important properties is the distribution of price fluctuations. Recently, there have been assertions that this distribution is qualitatively different in emerging markets as compared to developed markets. Here we analyse both high-frequency tick-by-tick as well as daily closing price data to show...

Self-organization of heterogeneous topology and symmetry breaking in networks with adaptive thresholds and rewiring

We study an evolutionary algorithm that locally adapts thresholds and wiring in Random Threshold Networks, based on measurements of a dynamical order parameter. If a node is active, with probability p an existing link is deleted, with probability 1− p the node’s threshold is increased, if it is frozen, with probability p it acquires a new link, with probability 1 − p the node’s threshold is dec...

Network Catastrophe: Self-Organized Patterns Reveal both the Instability and the Structure of Complex Networks

Critical events in society or biological systems can be understood as large-scale self-emergent phenomena due to deteriorating stability. We often observe peculiar patterns preceding these events, posing a question of-how to interpret the self-organized patterns to know more about the imminent crisis. We start with a very general description - of interacting population giving rise to large-scal...

Models of self-organized criticality which can be described as singular diffusions with or without (multiplicative) Wiener forcing term (as e.g. the Bak/Tang/Wiesenfeldand Zhang-models) are analyzed. Existence and uniqueness of nonnegative strong solutions are proved. Previously numerically predicted transition to the critical state in 1-D is confirmed by a rigorous proof that this indeed happe...
